Choose to Make a Difference - Volunteer at UCLA Health System

UCLA Volunteer with Joe and Josephine BruinWhen you choose to volunteer at UCLA Health System, you become a vital part of a vibrant healthcare resource in the heart of West Los Angeles. We are rich with history, innovation and achievement. Science in the laboratory becomes practice at the bedside, pioneering medical techniques are advanced, and lives are transformed.

The perfect volunteer opportunity awaits you at our hospitals in Westwood and Santa Monica. UCLA Health System volunteers are exceptional individuals who give back to their community. Over 1500 people volunteer monthly throughout 250 departments at UCLA Health System. These men, women and teenagers donate their time and share their talents throughout our hospitals, research facilities and patient care areas, bringing a special personal touch to our patients and families.

Who can volunteer?

Anybody age 15 years and older can become a volunteer. Our volunteers include recent retirees, people looking for a career change, or those with a small block of free time who want to help make the lives of others more comfortable. We also offer special volunteer opportunities for corporations, schools and community groups. What our volunteers have in common is that they want to be challenged. They want to make a difference.

What is the time commitment?

Some people can afford to volunteer entire days, while others can only spare a few hours here and there. Working with a volunteer coordinator, each volunteer will design a schedule that best fits his or her availability.

What will I do?

Opportunities abound for volunteers who want to work with patients as well as those who prefer behind-the-scenes roles.

Ambassador program: Join a select group of volunteers who act as hosts to help our patients and their families navigate what can seem to them an overwhelming medical facility.

Student Intern program: Student internships are non-clinical in nature and focus primarily on the business or administrative component of healthcare. Learn more about the student intern program.

Patient liaisons: Provide needed support to patients and their families.

Administrative: Help behind-the-scenes by delivering prescriptions, entering research data n a laboratory setting or providing clerical assistance to various departments.

Public service areas: Assist at the information desks, surgical waiting area and gift shops.

Create a new volunteer opportunity: Have you wanted to start a music enrichment program? Let’s talk about your ideas!

How do I start?

Perspective volunteers meet individually with a Volunteer Services Coordinator to discuss their interests, the more than 200 specialized volunteer jobs available, and their preferred time commitment. Each person is then matched to an appropriate department and volunteer assignment.
